Why Cheap HVAC Is Not Always Best

Times are tough, and money is tight. No one wants to spend more on home repairs than they have to. When your home heating or air conditioning system needs to be replaced, homeowners will often get several estimates from local companies.

In the end, some estimates will be higher, some lower.

And sometimes an estimate will come in much lower.

In those cases, it’s tempting to go with a company that will do the job on the cheap. However, the price should not be the only consideration in choosing an HVAC company. You should take into account longevity, history, quality of work and the quality of their technicians.

Before you jump at that low price, here are a few things to keep in mind when considering cut-rate services:

Are they licensed and equipped? It’s a lot easier to provide cheap HVAC services when the technicians are not licensed in the area where they work, do not carry insurance and do not maintain the parts needed for the job. Quality counts, especially where safety is at risk. Extremely low price estimates can often mean that corners are being cut in order to squeeze a profit.

If the technicians are not properly licensed, can you be sure that they are capable of doing the job to code? For example, improper furnace or boiler exhaust installation can create a potential carbon monoxide risk.

Will they back their work? Fly-by-night companies may offer a heating or air conditioning system that can hundreds or even thousands of dollars less than competitors. When the job is completed, will they stand by their work? If there is a breakdown soon after, will they ever return to set things right? Is your contract in writing or are you relying on a verbal promise to get the job?

Is it what you are paying for? Are you getting what you think you are getting? Are you getting the real brand you want and new HVAC equipment? Some unscrupulous companies will install used systems while telling you they are brand new. Others may leave old parts in place instead of replacing them.

Finally, if a deal seems too good to be true… then it probably is. When you see a bargain or deal that you find hard to believe, check it out thoroughly before you commit any money to it. There’s usually a catch or two involved.

In the end, you could end up paying more to fix the problems a second time.

A real-life example of going cheap and regretting it comes from someone who did not use our services, but later wished she did. Her review from Angie’s List sums it up nicely:

Jean R. from Carmel, NY
Categories: Heating & A/C; Water Heaters
Services Performed: No
Work Completed Date: September 17, 2013
Hire Again: Yes
Description Of Work: I called Go Green to get help in planning and estimating a mini-split HVAC system and heat pump water heater.
Member Comments: The representatives I spoke with where very pleasant and very helpful. In fact, the rep that did the site survey seemed incredibly knowledgeable and willing to think creatively about solutions for my old cottage. Unfortunately, they came in high on their estimate and we chose another company….who did not live up to our expectations. I regret not spending a little more and probably getting more for my money. If I ever need work like this done again I will put Go Green at the top of my list.

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!
