What Are Mini Split Air Conditioners?
A mini split ductless air conditioner
system is an excellent alternative for heating and cooling older homes with
radiators or baseboard heaters. Many existing homes may not have space to
incorporate bulky ductwork systems needed for a traditional central air
conditioning system. To do so is expensive. Mini split A/C systems require
very little space and are much easier to install.
Like standard air-source
heat pumps, mini splits have two primary components: an outdoor condenser/compressor,
and an indoor air-handling unit. A primary conduit houses the power cable,
refrigerant tubing, suction tubing, and a condensate drain, links both the
outdoor and indoor units.
The interior units of a mini split system can be installed below the ceiling
or above windows. They can also be installed along the bottom of a wall.
Mini Split Advantages
The
main advantages of mini split air conditioner units are in their small size
and flexibility for heating and cooling individual rooms. Many models have
multiple indoor air handling units connected to a single outdoor unit. There
is no ductwork to connect the units. The only conduit to the outside is
a 2-3 inch hole in the wall behind the inside mini split unit.
Mini splits offer compact, flexibile design options. The indoor air handlers
can be mounted on a ceiling, mounted flush into a drop ceiling, or hung
above a window or on a wall. Floor-standing models are also available.
With the ductless mini split systems the compressor unit that makes most
of the noise is outside of the room. An exterior compressor unit can as
a 100 feet away from the interior, evaporator units. The interior blower
units run much more quietly.

with central forced air systems. Duct losses can account for more than a
third of energy consumption for space conditioning, especially if the ducts
are located in areas such as an attic.
