Air contains water vapor. The amount of water vapor is called humidity. An important physical aspect of air is that it can only hold so much water vapor. This is called relative humidity and is usually expressed as a percentage. Air at 100% relative humidity cannot hold anymore water vapor. If the air is at 50% relative humidity then the amount of water vapor can be doubled before reaching the maximum limit.
Then there is relative humidity. Here the maximum amount of water vapor decreases with temperature. Air at 85 degrees Fahrenheit can hold about 10 times more water vapor than air at 25 degrees Fahrenheit. The air seems so dry in the winter because the cold outdoor air simply cannot hold much water. When you heat your home, you are increasing the air temperature but not the moisture content. So outdoor winter air with relative humidity of 90% can drop to 30% when the air is heated indoors.
A
humidifier is an appliance that increases the humidity (moisture) in a single
room or throughout an entire house. Humidifiers work by putting moisture
into circulation in the air, raising the humidity level. Point-of-use
humidifiers are commonly used to humidify a single room. Console
humidifiers are larger and can be used to humidify multiple rooms or
small apartments. For humidifying large spaces or an entire house, it is
more cost-effective to use a whole house humidifier. Whole-house
or furnace humidifiers, connect directly to a home's HVAC
system to provide humidity for an entire home.
In the winter, turning your temperature up will warm you but won’t increase your home’s humidity level. In fact, increasing the heat without adding moisture will actually lower the air humidity further. Normal activities such as showering and cooking simply don’t produce enough moisture to keep your home’s air from being too dry.
Exceptionally dry air can create unhealthy effects, including dry nose, cracked, itchy skin, nosebleeds and sore throats. Dry air can aggravate asthma and allergy symptoms. Medical experts agree that many viruses thrive in low humidity. This increases increasing the likelihood of catching colds, flu and upper respiratory ailments. It can even cause damage to wood floors, moulding and furniture.
A whole-home humidifier will deliver just the perfect amount of moisture to the air making you feel more comfortable at lower thermostat settings. A furnace humidifier uses your home's water system, and is installed into your home's ductwork. With the proper humidity, you can enjoy the same comfort at a lower temperature. According to the EPA, you can save up to 4% on your heating bill for every degree you lower your thermostat.
Furnace humidifiers are initially more expensive than the other models. However, they are more energy efficient and cost less to operate over the long term. Annual maintenance costs, including filter changes, a very low.
