It's a great question that is often difficult to answer. Many homeowners are pretty handy with plumbing and heating systems, and it is a difficult decision to spend the money bringing a pro in to do a job that you could do yourself.
Why choose a professional?
Why not do it yourself?
Why spend the extra money?
Why be hassled with the inconvenience of waiting around for someone to show up?
These are tough questions, and I think there are certainly times when it makes sense to tackle a small heating or plumbing project on your own. If you have the tools and the time, many homeowners can do it themselves and save a bundle. If a project is within your skillset, there are many home improvement centers around which have "the stuff" you need to do a project yourself.
As a 30-year skilled professional, I certainly have an opinion on when it does or does not not make sense to do it yourself, and these are the questions to ask yourself:
-
If you are dealing with fossil fuels or electricity are you comfortable you really know how to keep it safe?
-
Do you really have all the tools you need to do the job fast and efficiently?
-
Can you finish the job in a time block where you are not going to inconvenience yourself and others for an extended period?
-
Do you have the time to commit to the project?
-
Do you really know what you need to do it once, or will you be off to the home center multiple times to fill in the missing parts?
We have been serving homeowners for three decades and have a lot of experience getting it done right and getting it done fast. We have the stuff on the truck most times, so the experience is pretty painless for our customers; we schedule it at their convenience, and we clean up after ourselves. If you don't have the time and want your problem solved… call a professional. We'll make you glad you did!
