I titled this as just "geothermal" because I think a lot of people are not clear on exactly what geothermal heating and cooling is all about. It's a magical thing in one way and in another way its the most basic thing in the world. Like most high tech solutions it is a way of efficiently making use of the natural world by taking advantage of existing mechanical know-how and applying it in a new way. Geothermal is not really all that high tech when you come down to it. It is however an ingenious way of maximizing use of the earths resources to live better and minimize our carbon footprint.
It is simple enough to understand that if we lived in a cave the heating and cooling requirements would be vastly different than having a house out in the open environment. It is not too practical to install our house in a cave (and there are not to many people who want to) but we can connect the cave to our house with a series of pipes pretty easilly. This is essentially what a geothermal system does. Then we connect a special machine called a heat pump to get us the little bit of extra heating or cooling so the cave temperature of 55 degrees is converted to 70 degrees. This is a tremendous energy advantage and provides home comfort and savings.
